When rising water levels inundated the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana, many species of animals were left to evolve differently in Tasmania than they did on the mainland of Australia, and with protection from predators like the dingo.

Mammals unique to Tasmania that are abundant in the Central Highlands include Tasmanian Devils, pademelons, and eastern quolls. Other mammals commonly seen are possums, wombats, echidnas, and wallabies.

While most Tasmanian mammals are nocturnal, the platypus performs in rivers and dams throughout the Highlands in early morning and late afternoon.

Three species of snakes – all venomous – live in the Highlands: the whip snake, copperhead and tiger snake.

Most of the plant species found in Tasmania are found nowhere else in the world. The Central Highlands' alpine climate supports many of these; some share ancestry with plants in New Zealand and South America, which were part of ancient Gondwana. Heath and shrubberies in which woody plants prevail provide spectacular displays.
